Sustainable packaging is that whose packaging system respects and helps to protect the environment. It is a favourable alternative for any company or institution and, of course, for nature. Although there is still a long road ahead, fortunately many companies and domestic and international organisations are increasingly convinced that sustainability is a necessary goal and a wise decision for the future.

Ensuring the balance between human development and nature is of vital importance, which is why environmental protection is the focus of many public policies of European organisations that perceive that it is necessary to act as soon as possible.

The circular economy and the European Union

We are sure you have often heard of the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. The circular economy is directly related to sustainability in that its main objective is to ensure that the value of products, materials and natural resources such as water or energy are maintained for as long as possible, thus decreasing the amount of waste.

The European Commission is committed to this initiative and is fostering certain measures on the circular economy to help European businesses and consumers during the transition to a more robust and circular economy in which resources are used in a more sustainable manner.

The European Commission encourages this type of initiative and requires all Member States to verify that packaging placed on the market meets certain basic requirements: limiting the weight of the packaging to the minimum to ensure safe handling, reduce waste and optimise logistics; minimising the content of hazardous substances in the packaging material and their products and that the packaging is designed to be reused.

Early this year the EU set new targets related to the circular economy that are scheduled to enter force before July 2020.

Why select Green Box sustainable packaging?

When company management decides to use environmentally friendly packaging it provides benefits for the company, its customers and the environment.

Green Box’s sustainable packaging system joins the circular economy model to reduce the devastating environmental impact of waste.

How do we do it?

Here at Green Box we understand the need to work in a and ecologically responsible manner. One of the keys to contributing to improving the environment is to adopt the circular economy model to reduce the impact we cause on the ecosystem within which we live.

Green Box achieves the following in the production and consumption phase:

  • Reduces the consumption of raw materials during manufacture

Compared to other traditional solutions such as cardboard, Green Box represents a saving of 90% of the cardboard consumed in 15-kg cartons used to transport the same amount of fruit (120kg) or 30% of the cardboard consumed in the manufacture of traditional cardboard cartons of the same capacity (120kg).

Cardboard area: 1.584 m2

Cardboard area: 12.751 m2

  • Saves on transport

Since Green Box does not require intermediate palletisation, it reduces laden weight by up to 10% compared to traditional solutions such as plastic or cardboard.

  • Ensures safer transport

Transport safety is another important benefit provided by Green Box packaging. It is calculated that 25% of the recorded truck accidents in 2017 were due to poorly secured loads. In the long run, these accidents entail millions of euros in losses for carriers that transport their products.

Green Box packaging is designed to address this problem. They are fitted with lugs on the feet to achieve perfect nesting and prevent lateral movement of the cargo in transit. In addition, the central load exerted by other pallet systems on the market is absent, which means that the cargo is not affected by compression forces.

  • Reduces monetary and product losses

Loss or damage to the product during transport entails serious economic losses for companies. Loads are exposed to numerous risks during transport such as impacts, dropping, vibrations, compression forces and acceleration and braking, among others.

This often means that the products inside the packaging are damaged en route. Green Box’s sustainable packaging considerably reduces product losses during transport since its design provides the strength and toughness to prevent them.

  • Conserves product quality and freshness better and saves energy consumption

The constant vertical ventilation ensures extended product freshness both in storage and during transport compared to other traditional solutions.

  • Saving in replenishing the shop

Its elegant design and capacity make Green Box an ideal solution as a showcase, contributing to increased stock rotation.

  •  Reduction of environmental impact in the pick-up and recycling phase

The high-quality materials and the manufacturing process extend the useful life of the box and enable the majority to be reused again and again.

All the materials used to make Green Box products are recycled, recyclable or from certified sustainable resources: pallets made of 100% recycled polypropylene; wood from PEFC-certified plantations (international organisation that promotes sustainable forest management) and use of cardboard made with recycled paper.

  • Proper disposal of waste due to our Europe-wide partner network

Thanks to our partners we increase the quantity and ensure the quality of the recycled material. This reverse logistic process provides us with clear advantages in environmental protection, reducing the consumption of raw materials and improving the relationship with our customers.

  • Savings in pick-up transport

Our system has a return rate of 1/10 (1 recycled truckload equals 10 loaded trucks), much higher than other traditional systems such as plastic, the index of which is 1/3.
